Reading Club: The Woman in White

This Friday the 29th of January we are having a meeting of the Reading Club to speak about the famous novel by Wilkie Collins, The Woman in White.

Wilkie Collins

William Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) was an English novelist and one of the earliest writers of the mystery story. Although he wrote many books, he is best remembered for The Woman in White (1860) and The Moonstone (1868).

He was a good friend of Charles Dickens and during his life he was a very popular writer in English, but after his death, his reputation declined as Dickens' bloomed. Now, Collins is being given more critical and popular attention than he has received for fifty years. Most of his books are in print, and all are now in e-text. He is studied widely; new film, television, and radio versions of some of his books have been made; and all of his letters have been published. However, there is still much to be discovered about this superstar of Victorian fiction

The Woman in White

The story is sometimes considered an early example of detective fiction with protagonist Walter Hartright employing many of the sleuthing techniques of later private detectives. The use of multiple narrators (including nearly all the principal characters) draws on Collins's legal training, and as he points out in his Preamble: "the story here presented will be told by more than one pen, as the story of an offence against the laws is told in Court by more than one witness". In 2003, Robert McCrum writing for The Observer listed The Woman in White number 23 in "the top 100 greatest novels of all time", and the novel was listed at number 77 on the BBC's survey The Big Read.

New readings for our Reading Club members

 This year we have two new recommendations for those of you who belong to our Reading Club:

• The Canterville Ghost, by Oscar Wilde. This book is recommended for 1st, 2nd and 3rd year ESO students. It is about a family who move into a house haunted by a ghost.

• The Woman in White, by Wilkie Collins, which is recommended for 3rd and 4th year students. It is a more complex story and is considered to be one of the first mystery novels in literature.

Both are engaging stories that you will surely love. Have a good read!

One of the best school libraries in Spain

Our school library has been awarded one of the second national prices for school libraries in Spain. We are all very proud of it as it is the heart of our school. Many of our classroom activities take place in it. In fact, students of the bilingual section often carry out their activites there: looking up for information in books or in the net, research work, oral activities with our American assistant, reading club meetings, etc.

Therefore this prize is for all of us who make our school library unique.

Reading Club trip to Ourense and Allariz

Those of us who are involved in the activities of the school Reading Club went on a school trip to both Ourense and Allariz.

First we visited Ourense and were shown the city by the teachers of IES Universidade Laboral. Students from this school's Reading Club also went around with us.

Then we travelled to Allariz, had lunch at the IES Allariz with students from the Reading Club of this secondary school and toured around the village.We were told about the Festa do Boi that takes place every June.


Finally we drove back to Ourense where we had the opportunity of seeing the shopping centre they have. Most students really enjoyed this last activity before coming back to Guntín.

Reading Club - The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Last Thursday the members of the CPI Tino Grandío Reading Club held another session to talk about the last book we have read: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain. This time the meeting was for teachers and it took place in a cafeteria in Lugo. We talked about several aspects of the book:

• The historical period of the story.
• Mark Twain's ideas about life, literature, Don Quixote, and his childhood near river Mississippi.
• The differences between the characters: Huck, Tom Sawyer, Jim and Huck's father.
• Slavery in America and the changing ideas about it at the period.
• The river and its importance in the story.
• Similarities and differences with Don Quixote.

We must say that we all loved the story and that we are willing to read something, probably in French for the next session of our Club.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - Reading Club

 Today we've had another session at the Reading Club to talk about the last book we've read: Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. A lot of students from the school were there to talk about this interesting story. We talked about the characters of Huck and Tom Sawyer, how different they are, the importance of river Mississippi in the story, 19th century America, slavery and many other topics.

Most of us had read the edition in English, abridged or unabridged, but some others weren't so confident and chose a translation into either Galician or Spanish. Despite the differences any edition is good when you want to appreciate a masterpiece like this one.

Reading Club meeting-The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

The school reading Club is going to hold a meeting next Thursday at 12.15 at the school library. We'll talk about the book that we have been reading lately; The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. If you have read it, please join us and tell us your opinion about it. If you haven't read it yet, borrow one copy from the school library becuse you still have time to read one of the shortened versions of the book. There are copies in English (in an adapted version or the original one) and translations into Spanish and Galician.

New books at the school library

Both the departments of History and English have bought some new books to enrich our school library. There are some readers about new interesting topics that you'll certainly like, some grammar books for you to take from and practise and other books about interesting historical and geographical topics, such as Captain Cook, Vikings or interesting places in the world. Just have a look and you'll surely find something worth reading.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn-Reading Club

Next month the Reading Club at CPI Tino Grandío will have another session for those of us who enjoy reading books in English. Samuel Donnelly has suggested Huckleberry Finn and we are all looking forward to reading it. As some members of the reading club can't read fluently in English (mainly teachers, I'm afraid) some copies in Galician and Spanish will soon be bought.

If you think it's a difficult book for you, just try and take it home. You'll certainly like it as much as those of us who have already read it. You'll find it at the school library and you can listen to the audio files here.
