My favourite place

This term we are going to start a project about our favourite places. You will have to follow the instructions:

1. First, download the template we will use.
2. Then, fill it in with information about your favourite place near your village. It is recommended that you choose a natural or traditional place (not a cinema or shopping centre).
3. Try to provide as much detail as possible.
4. You should take some pictures and bring them to school in a pendrive or through mail or a cloud server (Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive...) to illustrate your work.  Even though it is not indispensable your work will look a lot more professional.
5. You will have to show and explain your work to the rest of the class and get a mark for both the presentation and how you have explained it.
6. The final works will be shown in the blog, printed and sent to the Natural Science Department to be part of Proxecto Terra.

San Froilán in Lugo

The origin of these celebrations in Lugo goes back to 1754. Since then they have become one of the most important festive occasions in Galicia.

From 4 to 12 October Lugo holds its San Froilán Fiestas, attracting thousands of visitors every year. Two of the days stand out especially within the festive programme: 5 October, with religious celebrations in honour of the patron saint, San Froilán; and the following Sunday, known as “O Domingo das Mozas”, which is dedicated to traditional Galician costumes and folklore. Over the course of these days there are a series of parades through the city, with "big-heads", brass bands, street markets and magic shows, juggling and street entertainment.

Children play a special role in the celebrations, with "San Froilanciño", a range of activities organised for the younger ones including traditional games, chess competitions, theatre productions and the International Puppet Festival, where you can see the oldest puppets in Spain. The fiestas come to an end 12 October with the Medieval Fair: the Cathedral square and the area around the Roman city wall are turned into a typical Medieval market, with an array of jongleurs, knights, demonstrations of falconry and traditional trades, and, of course, a medieval banquet is also held. In the evening, a stunning firework display brings the celebrations to a close until the following year.

About to start a new school year

Once again the summer holidays are over and we have to start thinking of the new year. It is a good time to make resolutions for this new school year. So, what changes should you make? Just concentrate on the most important ones but remember that the most important thing is being realistic about the changes we want to make and sticking to our resolutions.

If you want to succeed at school, you should:

1. Pay attention to your teachers in class and ask them if there is something you do not understand.
2. Decide how long you are going to study every day (even if there are no written exercises for homework)
3. Make a timetable for your study time and follow it. Stick in on your desk so that you can easily see it.
4. Allow for some rest if you have to study for longer periods than one hour.
5. Everything you may need should be at reach so that you don't have any excuses for standing up.
6. Ask your family for help: they might ask you how things are going, help you study for your exams, etc.
7. Tell your family how things are going. Tell them when there is good and bad news.

And remember that the most difficult thing is to make these changes permanent.

School Day of Non-violence and Peace

Today we celebrate the School Day of Non-violence and Peace. It is celebrated today because Mohatmas Gandhi died on a 30th of January 63 years ago.

It is celebrated in many schools and you can read this letter if you want to learn a bit more about it.

Saint Froilán's day

Hi,

Today is Saint Froilán's Day.Saint Froilán is the patron saint of Lugo. Lugo is near Guntín. Many of our classmates didn't come to school today.

They are eating octopus, the typical Saint Froilán food, enjoying the rides and having fun.

Dear students,
My name is Sarah and I am going to be your new "auxiliar" next year. I was born in a small city in western Michigan called Muskegon. I grew up in two even smaller cities called Whitehall and Montague. When I was a kid, I liked to go to the beach (both Whitehall and Montague are located very close to Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes in the United States), go to the park, and watch movies. I went to college at a small state college in Allendale, Michigan called Grand Valley State University. At GVSU, I studied Spanish, French and Secondary Education. While I was at GVSU, I was able to study at the University of Guadalajara In Guadalajara, Jalisco Mexico, the second largest city in Mexico. After I got my B. A. (Bachelor's of the Arts) in Spanish, I worked for a short time as a substitute teacher, a migrant Head Start teacher, and a bilingual teacher assistant. Then, I moved to Ohio to work on my M. A. (Master's of the Arts) at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, the largest city and capital of the state of Ohio. At OSU, I studied Peninsular (Spanish) and Latin American Literature and taught Spanish to university students. In my free time, I like to watch movies, listen to music, read, sing in choirs, and cook. My favorite dishes to prepare are chicken cacciatore (Italian), arroz con pollo (Spanish) pollo con mole, fajitas, tacos, enchiladas, and huevos rancheros (Mexican). I have two dogs, Danny Boy and Bella. Danny Boy is a Chihuahua mixed with a papillon, a small French dog, and Bella is a papillon mixed with a Pomeranian. I look forward to meeting you all. I am very excited to travel to Spain. I have seen pictures of Lugo on the web and on You-tube and your city looks very beautiful. I bet you are very proud of it!
